Republic Austria - Nationalbank 1945
The German Reichsmark currency circulated in Austria during World War 2. The economic focus in Germany on fuelling the war machinery caused heavy inflation and a weakness of the currency. Due to the war effort the economies of Germany and Austria were totally run down and there was much more money than goods to buy. Allied military money was given into circulation, as well, increasing the infaltionary pressure to some limited extend. To reform the money a new law - the Schillinggesetz (Schilling Act) was enacted on 30 November 1945. In it the new currency for Austria was regulated.
New bills were issued that looked similar to the bill from before 1938. The Austrian Reichsmark bills and Allied bills were exchanged into the new bills at a rate of 1 to 1. And the new Schilling became the only legal tender.
